“Saving Asia’s Migratory Waterbirds – What we can do in Malaysia”

Dear Members,

In conjunction with World Migratory Bird Day, join us for an exciting talk on

“Saving Asia’s Migratory Waterbirds – What we can do in Malaysia” by a shorebird expert in the region – Dr Yong Ding Li, Regional Flyways Coordinator of BirdLife International Asia.

Date :    Friday 14th October 2022

Time :   7.30pm
Venue : Islamic Information Centre, Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, Kuching

Saving Asia’s Migratory Waterbirds - What We Can Do In Malaysia

Each year, hundreds of thousands of migratory waterbirds visit Malaysia’s coastal wetlands during the northern winter. Yet, wetlands such as mangroves and mudflats are increasingly impacted by the activities of man, and more needs to be done to protect them for future generations. Furthermore, the recent discovery of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper in Sarawak’s coast reminds us that there is still much to learn about the ecology and distribution of migratory waterbirds in Malaysia’s wetlands. At this Talk, Ding Li will contextualise the importance of Malaysia’s wetlands for migratory waterbirds at the flyway level and talk about what we can do to secure the future of wetlands for migratory birds and local people.

Talk:Combating Illegal Wildlife Trade in Sarawak

Dear Members & Friends,

In 2019, 30 MNS Kuching Branch members attended the Honorary Wildlife Rangers (HWR) training conducted by Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).  HWR plays  important roles as the ears and eyes in helping  to monitor illegal wildlife activities by reporting  them to the authorities.

Two officers from SFC will share about activities in combating illegal wildlife trade in Sarawak and other matters related to it.

Please feel free to bring your friends along.

Title:  Combating Illegal Wildlife Trade in Sarawak

Time:  7.30pm

Date:     Tuesday 16th August 2022

Venue:  Islamic Information Centre

             Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, Kuching

Combating illegal wildlife trade  is everyone’s responsibility to enhance the protection and enforcement efforts by the relevant authorities.  They can report any suspicious activities concerning wildlife trade or illegal logging, but avoid publishing such activities in social media as this could jeopardise ongoing investigations.

How do we go about this, Who to report to?  Who are the agencies responsible for such enforcement?

Leonard Baring is Head of Swift Wildlife Action Team (SWAT)  and WildLife Enforcement Section.  He will share about enforcement legislation and activities carried out by SFC to combat illegal wildlife trade in Sarawak.

Willy Chin is Head of Totally Protected Area Protection Section.  He will talk about the protection and conservation of wildlife in Sarawak.
