Talk on Highland salt

Dear  members & friends of MNS,

You are invited to a talk by Jayl Langub brought to you by Malaysian Nature Society KB and Friends of Sarawak Museum.
A Public Talk: Highland SaltDay / Date: Wednesday, 7 September, 2016 Time: 7:30pmVenue: Islamic Centre, Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, Kuching

Salt, a precious natural resource, has been used as currency, a trade item. It has been the reason for wars and the formation of countries. It is a necessity of life. It is on our tables, in our food and in oceans and sea.
However, the presence of salt water springs, in the Kelabit-Krayan Highlands in Central Borneo may come as a surprise. There are over 40 known actively producing salt springs in the area with each producing a unique salt with respect to flavour, colour and use. This necessity has been and continues to be a trade item for the Lun Bawang and Kelabit of Sarawak and the Lundayeh of East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Jayl Langub, who has retired from the Sarawak State Civil Service, is an Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of Borneo Studies, UNIMAS and a WWF- Malaysia Trustee. He has been involved in various research projects including joint ones with foreign scholars. He holds a BA in anthropology from McGill University and a MA in community development from the University of Alberta.
Regards and see you there and don't forget to visit our merchandise booth with some new books for sale and other items.
