Reforestation in Sarawak - Challenges and Solutions
To date all reforestation in Sarawak and worldwide has been largely confined to the planting of monocultures of usually non-native species. The rarity of planting material of the desirable indigenous species poses a particular challenge but these are now being overcome by novel and cheap methods which will be outlined together with evidence of the suitability and rapidity of growth of many local species.
About the speaker.
Tim Hatch came to Sarawak in 1977 to join the Agriculture Department where he worked on the problems of Shifting Cultivation and Soil Erosion for over five years. He then set up a landscaping and grassing company which evolved into a large biotechnology company of which he is the Research Director. Tim now dedicates himself to the cause of replanting and restoring the great forests of Sarawak and has recently set up a Facebook Page called ‘Rescuing Borneo’.

Rapid Assessments of Helmeted Hornbills at priority sites in Sarawak

The largest Hornbill species in Borneo, with strong ecological and cultural importance to the land of Sarawak...is unfortunately also threatened with extinction.

Under the guidance and funding of Birdlife International (Asia), members of Malaysian Nature Society Kuching Branch have travelled to priority sites in Sarawak, to obtain assessment on the population health of Helmeted Hornbills.

A young member of Malaysian Nature Society Kuching Branch, Batrisya Teepol, will share with you the findings about the Helmeted Hornbills.
Asian Birdlife Festival and Nature Expo 2020 + Khao Yai National Park

With 35 local and 9 international partners joining, the Asian Birdlife Festival and Nature Expo 2020 was held on 19-20 January 2020 in Bangkok to promote nature education and conservation efforts by organizations to establish stronger relationship between local and international organisations. After the bird festival, a trip to the UNESCO World Heritage center, Khao Yai National Park, was held to show international delegates the uniqueness of Thailand's flora and fauna.

Malaysian Nature Society Kuching Branch's young member, Jason Teo, will shares what he has learned from the Bird Festival and Khao Yai National Park.

Raptor Counting in Tanjung Tuan, Melaka

With migrating raptor numbers which can reach up to thousands a day, Tanjung Tuan is one of the best sites in Malaysia to count migrating raptors and also an important site to study the population health of migratory raptors using the Main Continental Flyway.

Jason Teo will share about the history, the establishment and the importance of Tanjung Tuan, Melaka for the annually migratory raptors.
