The Status of Crocodiles in Sarawak

Despite  the recent  downlisting  of salt crocodiles in Sarawak from Appendix I to Appendix II under the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of  Wild Fauna & Flora (CITES), crocodiles remain  protected  under the  Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998.  They are primitive animals,  presently estimated at 14,000 individuals.  Crocodiles are   found in many of Sarawak’s rivers.  In Kuching, they are found in
Sg Santubong, Sg Bako and Sg Sarawak.

Owing to human and crocodile conflict,  culling of crocodiles is being carried out by the authorities, which may extend to issuing licences to the public to do that as well.

Details of harvesting and licensing of  crocodiles have yet to be set by the authorities where the meat and skin can be sold in the international market to generate income.  What is the status on the conservation of crocodiles?

Come and listen to our public awareness Talk by Mr Oswald Braken Tisen, Deputy Manager of Sarawak Forestry Corporation, who attended the Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES organized  in Johannesburg, South Africa in September 2016.
