In Memory- Rebecca D’Cruz
Rebecca D’Cruz, born on 4 February 1964 passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on 29 May 2023. She was fondly known as ‘Becky’ to her friends and many of us who knew her through here extensive involvement in the Malaysian Nature Society.
Nature, wildlife, and animals were a lifelong a passion and leading to work with Wetlands International and the RAMSAR Secretariat, along with her consultancy work. She was passionate about the natural world; she was an active member of SSPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and MNSKB (Malaysian Nature Society – Kuching Branch). She was the Secretary of MNS-KB for about 5 years from 2002 and then the Chairperson from 2008 to 2010.
The visibility and the variety of activities dramatically increased when Becky arrived on the scene. It was during these years that the branch organised a clean-up of Mount Santubong, started running a weekly article in the Borneo Post (a Kuching-based paper), curated exciting trips such as those to Talang Talang (Turtle Islands), dolphin and crocodile watching. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and she was never short of helping hands to turn ideas, hers, and others, into reality.
She will be remembered around the world for her foresight and her profound love for the natural world. She will be remembered for thought-provoking discussions and enabling those around her to look beyond boundaries.
It was with heavy hearts and sadness that we learnt of Becky’s passing but she lives on in the hearts of all who were in touched by her brief but powerful passage on Earth.
We extend our deepest sympathy to her beloved and devoted husband, Anthony Sebastian, and her extended family and friends. We are so very sorry for your loss.
In deepest sympathy
Rose Au, Batrisya Teepol, Cynthia Lobato, Jason Teo, Solomon Hii, Faith Au, Hilda Jelembai and all members of the Malaysian Nature Society Kuching Branch.
