Kubah National Park

Kubah National Park is located about 20 kilometres from Kuching and takes about 40 minutes to get there by road. The Park  covers 2,230 hectares and is a sandstone plateau,between 150-450 metres high.

The park has a beautiful lowland forest with a great diversity of birds. Endemic species such  as Bornean Banded Kingfisher, Bornean Wren Babbler and Blue Banded Pitta are found here. Other birds include the Scarlet-breasted Flowerpecker and  Asian Paradise-Flycatcher.

Direction:          Drive towards Matang Family Park, shortly you will see

                         the  park's entrance sign-posted on the lefthand side.

Note 

There will be a relatively gradual climb along tar-sealed road up to 900 feet high from the park office.

There is no canteen at the park.

Subject to weather conditions, we may finish earlier than the scheduled time.

There will be a debriefing to exchange notes on the birds seen before we end the trip.

MNS KB is organising a second birding trip to Kubah National Park on Sunday, 3rd April 2016. Details are:-

When?                        :           Sunday, 3^rd April 2016.

Time & Duration         :           The whole day (8.00 am – 5.00pm)

                                                * We will meet at the entrance of the NP at 8.00 am sharp

                                         Do leave Kuching on time, and to be on the safe side, leave at 7.00 am.

Entrance Fee             :           You need to pay for the entrance fee into the National Park as below

                                                RM 10.00 (locals)

                                                RM 20.00 (foreigners)

§  Non Members will need to pay RM 10.00 (cash term only) to Eddy

About Kubah National Park

It is located about 20 kilometres from Kuching and takes 40 minutes by road to get there.

The Park is 2,230 hectares in size, dominated by a sandstone plateau, including Mt. Serapi, Mt. Selang and Mt. Sendok,  between 150-450 metres high, with waterfalls.  This habitat is ideal for birds, flora and fauna.

The Park is largely undisturbed natural forest, including vegetation types such as Alluvial, Lowland Mixed Dipterocarp, Kerangas, Submontane and Mangrove forests.  This vegetation mix results in a rich variety of palms, endemic orchids, pitcher plants, gingers, trees, etc.  The natural Frog Pond recorded an estimate of 56 species – more than 1/3 of the species in Borneo.

Kubah National Park has the richest palm habitat in the world. In 1865, Odoardo Beccari, a renowned Italian naturalist and taxonomist collected palms at the Park.  18 endemic palm species have been recorded, out of which 16 species are found in the Park itself.

It is the easiest place in the world to see the Blue Banded Pitta.  Other birds include the Scarlett-breasted Flowerpecker, Wallace’s Hawk-eagle, Borneon Blue Flycatcher, Rufous-chested Flycatcher, Rufous-backed Kingfisher and Great Argus Pheasant.

MNS birding trip to Kpg Chupak on the 24th November 2013 at 3:30 p.m.

Dear members, 

There will be birding trip to Kpg Chupak on the 24th November 2013 at 3:30 p.m. Those not familiar with the place, please meet at Tapah Town, next to the public park (visible from main road) not later than 3:00 p.m. 

Species sighted recently include Pacific Golden Plover, White Browed Crake, Wood Sandpiper, Greenshank, Common Moorhen, Oriental Pratincole, Little Egret, Intermediate Egret, Great Egret, Cinnamon Bittern, Chinese Pond Heron, Munias, Osprey etc.

Participation for members is free. Non-Member RM10. Please reply this email by Saturday afternoon to confirm participation. mnskuching@gmail.com

1) Car pooling are encouraged as there are limited parking space.
2) Those driving to the location, please park carefully without obstructing the flow of traffic and very importantly, do not run over paddy seedling the farmers planted by the roadside.

ANNOUNCEMENT – BIRDING TRIP

The MNS Kuching Branch Bird Group is organizing a birding trip to Chupak!

It will be a perfect time to visit Chupak again as the paddy fields have just been planted and are in great condition to showcase the birds found there. 

Previous sightings at Chupak have been more than rewarding.  The Buff-banded Rail, a first sighting record for Kuching, was spotted in Chupak.  More recent sightings include the Black-winged Stilt and Gargarney.

The trip will be led by our expert birders, Daniel Kong and Yeo Siew Teck.  Unlike the usual early morning birding trips, the Sunday afternoon trip will give us a chance to see birds which are more active in the evening. 

Meeting Point:              By the road at Tapah Village

                                     Taman Rekresis Tapah (Town Park) Please be there by 3.45pm

For those who prefer to sleep in on Sunday you still can join us!

One of the nearest and most extensive rice fields around Kuching area, Kg. Chupak/Skudup attract great number of migratory and wetland birds.   A number of interesting sightings have come out of the area including Sand Martin (1^st record for Borneo for nearly a century), Greater Painted-Snipe (1^st for Sarawak), Red-necked Phalarope, Blue-breasted Quail, Black-winged Stilt and Chinese Pond Heron. 

HOW TO GET THERE  Drive up the Kuching/Serian road, passing Siburan town, 18 mils (Jong’s Crocodile Farm) and Beratok town, 22 miles (limestone quarry is opposite the town).  Drive further along the road for 2 more miles and you will pass a Shell petrol station on your left.  Tapah town is just a kilometer along the road from Shell station.  So slow down!  Turn into Tapah town and meet at the road side in front of Taman Rekresis Tapah (Town Park) which is next to the Tapah Chinese Primary School.  Please be there on time - Those who are late will have to find their way to Chupak themselves.

TO BRING Please bring along your binocular, bird guides, pocket-size note pad, hat, and umbrella.  Please also remember to wear dull-coloured clothes.
